![]() ![]() This contradictory desire - to use form to consider formlessness - is Forest Dark’s animating impulse. ![]() ![]() I wanted to employ them in a form that could contain the formless, so that it might be held close, as meaning is held close, and grappled with. I didn’t want to give them up - didn’t want to live without their consolation. In a story, a person always needs a reason for the things she does Chaos is the one truth that narrative must always betray the more I wrote, the more suspect the good sense and studied beauty achieved by the mechanisms of narrative seemed to me. Though she has long practiced its art, she finds herself frustrated by its inability to capture what she terms “formlessness”: EARLY IN Forest Dark, Nicole Krauss’s fourth and most inward-looking novel, one of its narrators - a successful Brooklyn novelist also named Nicole - meditates on the limits of fiction. ![]()

![]() It's up to them to save their best friends forever after from a curse that threatens to give their school-and their lives-a very unhappy ending. Lizzie Hearts, Wonderland's future queen, Cedar Wood, daughter of Pinocchio, and Madeline Hatter, heir to the Mad Hatter's Hat and Tea Shoppe, seem to be the only ones who haven't completely lost their heads. The students transform into animals and objects, palace mice talk, and the beautiful green grounds on campus fade to black-and-white. When a mysterious being from Wonderland begins to infect Ever After High with a strange magic, everything goes topsy-turvy. Just before a press blitz aimed at highlighting the Mexican governments anti-poverty stance, homeless Juan Pérez (Damián Alcázar) finds himself in a federal banking office. Now no one's destiny is certain, not even for the most royal of them all, Apple White. But when Raven Queen came along, things became fairy, fairy confusing. ![]() ![]() ![]() At Ever After High, everyone is expected to sign the Storybook of Legends, pledging to follow in their fairytale parent's footsteps. ![]() ![]() In “one of the best books about geopolitics” ( The Evening Standard), now updated to include 2016 geopolitical developments, journalist Tim Marshall examines Russia, China, the US, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Japan, Korea, and Greenland and the Arctic-their weather, seas, mountains, rivers, deserts, and borders-to provide a context often missing from our political reportage: how the physical characteristics of these countries affect their strengths and vulnerabilities and the decisions made by their leaders. Like kissing, cuddling, getting to know each other without any pretend or acts. He shows so much vulnerability and there are so many amazing softer scenes. ![]() But not in this book! I’m so glad I decided to read this gem! Even though the romance is constantly getting interrupted by demon attacks (very frustrating!), the romance is definitely not thin anymore! I love the way you could follow how their relationship deepens and how Alec is worried about his lack of experience, but still NEEDS to take things further. When Cassandra Clare originally wrote The Mortal Instruments she had to hold back on love scenes between Magnus and Alec to not risk getting the books be considered ”inappropriate”, which I now realize in hindsight is why the relationship between them felt a bit thin and not so engaging at times. It’s an additional book to the Mortal Instruments series telling the swash-buckling romantic adventures of Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood on the vacation mentioned in City of Fallen Angels (the 4th book in the series). Before reading this book, I actually thought I was ready to leave the Shadowhunter realm, but oh no, this book sure drew me right back in again. ![]() ![]() As a fan of Headley’s writing and highly anticipated, Aerie ended up being an enjoyable read, if somewhat of a lesser loved one. Every actor gives life to Clavell's carefully drawn and layered characters (most of all a very bombastic John Rhys-Davies). Supporting him are Japanese icon Toshiro Mifune as the shrewd warlord and aspiring shogun Torunaga, who befriends/manipulates Blackthorne, and Yoko Shimada as Blackthorne's translator, confident and friend. Richard Chamberlain embodies Blackthorne to perfection, successfully gaining our empathy through an ambiguous yet very human performance. With all respect for the 2003 film, Shogun is far out of it's reach. People who have seen "The Last Samurai" might see a few plot similarities (even in certain smaller details: Tom Cruise sports exactly the same haircut as Richard Chamberlain).
